Chinese Herbs for Constipation

Chinese herbs get good results for even the most stubborn cases of constipation.  Constipation occurs when one has difficulty passing the stool, and it occurs when one goes without having a bowel movement for 3 or more days.  Constipation may also occur with abdominal pain and bloating.  In Chinese herbal medicine we recognize several patterns of constipation, they are outlined below.

CONSTIPATION WITH EXCESSIVE HEAT
This pattern is very common in people who eat too much or are overweight.  This type of constipation may occur suddenly and be of an extreme nature, it frequently occurs with:
  • Dry Stools
  • Fever Sensations
  • Frequent or Extreme Thirst
  • Bad Breath
  • Sweating
  • Red Face or Complexion
  • Abdominal Pain or  Pain after Eating
The herbs used for this condition help to clear heat from the body and moisten and stimulate the intestines to facilitate bowel movements.  To purchase the herbs for this pattern of constipation follow the link Easy Move.

CONSTIPATION WITH LIVER IMBALANCE AND STAGNATION
This pattern is common in people who have excessive stress.  The most common signs of this pattern are:
  • Small Pebble Shaped Stool
  • Urge to have a BM but inability to do so
  • Irritability or Anger
  • Belching
  • Abdominal or Rib-Side Tightness
For this type of constipation it is best to use Free and Easy Wanderer and Triphala laxative.

CONSTIPATION WITH BLOOD DEFICIENCY
This pattern occurs when there is not enough blood in the body, as a result the intestines are not lubricated with enough fluids to move the bowels properly.  This pattern is common in women, and symptoms include:
  • Dry Stools
  • Dizziness
  • Dull Complexion
  • Anemia
  • Numbness in the Limbs
  • Blurred Vision
For this type of constipation eat foods such as berries, beetroots, and dark leafy greens.  The herbs to be used include Triphala laxative and Dang Gui Tonifier.

CONSTIPATION WITH FLUID DEFICIENCY
When there is a lack of fluids in the body the intestines will not be lubricated enough to pass the stools.  When this pattern is present there will often be accompanying signs of:
  • Dry Stools
  • Frequent Thirst
  • Dry Mouth or Throat
  • Sore Low Back
  • Night Sweats
  • Dehydration
When this type of constipation is present it is essential to get adequate fluids.  In addition to drinking sufficient amounts of water it is important to eat lubricating foods such as pears, apples, bananas, bok choy, tomatoes, and avocado.  The herbal remedies to be used are Triphala laxative and Five Seen Tea Pills.

These are the most common patterns of constipation and account for a majority of the cases that can be observed in clinic.  If you have constipation that is not characterized by any of the above patterns, feel free to contact us about your particular condition.  We will be happy to assist you in finding the right herbal remedies.
